Mashafi was the takhallus of Shaikh Ghulam Hamdani.
This selection contains the best verses of Ghulam Hamdani Mushafi, an eighteenth century poet who became involved in tumultuous literary rivalry and controversy, but whose own corpus of poetry is marked by serenity and mellowness. While the masters of the earlier generation had torrentially contributed their individual style, it was left to Mushafi to bring the tide to an even flow, so that a tradition became recognizable. Mushafi’s deep sense of pathos combined with a lilting inflection became the dominant poetic idiom of his age.
