Sir John Kennedy was in a unique position to observe the personalities and decisions of the British high command in WW2, especially in the early part of the war, written while many leaders and witnesses were still alive in over fifty years ago.
Recognized before the war for his talents as an excellent staff executive or director for a chief of staff, he saw the personal side of some of the leaders, the personality clashes and also those that quickly meshed, those left behind and those who sometimes soared for whatever lucky reason through the various tumults of the war.
For some, no matter their abilities and competence, the situation swept them away through no fault of theirs, the flood of pre-war stupidity damned them despite the good foundation they began for the eventual victory.
For others, their spouse's serious health problems naturally affected them, and those that sacked them didn't realise the reason why until it was too late.
