Phoenix Ascendant : The Rise of Modern Turkey Irfan Orga, 1908-1970 - London Robert Hale Limited 1958 - 205 Pages 22x14 cm HB
Includes Index
A rare and hard to find biography of one of the most important political figures of the 20th century this is without doubt one of the best. Avoiding the cult of personality biographies found in book shops in Turkey or the rabid anti Ataturk biographies found on the Internet written by his detractors this book provides a balanced account of the man and the country he founded.
Comprehensive and detailed it begins with Ataturk's early life, his education and upbringing, his early military career leading up to his involvement in the Gallipoli campaigns (Which Orga's own father took part in and died) through to his posting in Istanbul, his dispatchment to Anatolia and leading the Turkish nationalist army to victory in what for Turks is known as the national war of liberation.
The book then goes on to examine the reforms that Ataturk brought into the country, the abolition of the Caliphate, the various political intrigues that took place and finally the modern Turkish nation which was Ataturk's main legacy.
